Neuse River Trail gets much needed makeover

One popular area of the Neuse River Trail is getting a much needed makeover.

A 20-year-old wooden bridge, which was originally built as part of the Hedingham neighborhood, eventually became part of the Capital Area Greenway and became a very popular destination for bikers and runners.

Many people complained to the city about the bumpiness of the wood, and beginning next week it will be closed for repairs.

"(We're) replacing it with a smooth concrete surface and replacing the railings with new railings," said David Bender, the project manager of Raleigh Greenways. "It's going to be a similar bridge to most of what the greenway users are used to on the rest of the Capital Area Greenway System."

Crews will close the bridge from July 5 until the end of November. There will be no detours.
