Tropical downpours from Alberto will create a risk of flash flooding from Alabama to Tennessee and in the southern Appalachians on Tuesday. There may also be an isolated tornado or two across the Tennessee Valley, east of Alberto’s track. There will also be more widely separated rain showers and thunderstorms amid the steamy air across other parts of the Southeast. There may be flash flooding in certain areas where the ground has been left saturated from recent heavy rain.

Another hot and dry day is in store for the southern Plains. Widespread triple-digit heat will bake western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The highs may break some records.

The heat will also rise into the Great Lakes with the warmth spilling across the Northeast. Most of the Northeast will be dry with spotty afternoon thunderstorms dotting the southern middle Atlantic.

Along the western edge of the heat, a storm system will bring severe thunderstorms across the northern and central Plains in the afternoon. Less intense thunderstorms are expected across the northern and central Rockies. The Northwest will be dry with a cool onshore flow and low clouds in the morning west of the mountains. Heat will intensify across the Southwest, away from the coast.

FOCUS: Southern Plains Heat Wave

A heat wave will take hold across the southern Plains later this week. Afternoon temperatures are expected to range from the mid-90s to the 100s from Texas to Kansas. Daily high temperatures may be record challenging in several locations.
