We are so fortunate to live in an incredible community that is full of fun things to do with your kids. That said, if you are a busy mom like me, you tend to sometimes fall into the trap of “staying with what you know.”
For instance, I KNOW the parks near my house that are fenced in, have more than two swings and aren’t near water, etc. I know the ones my twin three year olds love … and the ones they love a little less. That is what makes our new little adventure so … adventurous.

Confession: I didn’t think of this. The wonderful woman who takes care of my kids (and really, my entire family) came up with this fabulous idea! She is planning to spend the summer visiting a different park each week with the girls.
This week, they ventured to Harris Lake County Park. It's 15 minutes from my house and convenient to Raleigh, Cary, Apex and Holly Springs. I had no idea it even existed until last week!
Tucked away in New Hill along the banks of the Shearon Harris Reservoir is this 680-acre oasis with plenty of shade. There are picnic shelters, mountain bike trails, disc golf fields and fishing piers. Nestled between all of that are wide open fields for running and playing, volleyball courts, sweet gardens, canoe rentals, playgrounds for kids big and little … and lots more to do.
My girls had a great time there, exploring a brand new spot without having to travel farther than we typically do. At age three, there was plenty to keep them both busy, but enough barriers to feel comfortable that they weren’t going to run into the parking lot or the water.
