Chilly but relatively seasonable conditions are expected for the northeastern states Tuesday. Temperatures will be 20 to 30 degrees lower than they were Sunday. An area of high pressure is forecast to move east over the upper part of the mid-Atlantic.

Farther south, lingering mild air and moisture will lead to clouds and showers from central Texas to Florida and the Carolinas.

Farther northwest, most areas from the Midwest to the southern and northern Plains can expect dry weather. After a chilly morning, temperatures will rebound to seasonable levels.

A weak storm will slowly move south across the Southwest. While this storm will not bring widespread rain and snow, it will increase humidity levels in the region. Spotty, low-elevation rain showers will occur, as well as some high country snow, including in Southern California. Not enough rain or snow will fall to alleviate the building drought conditions.

In the Northwest, most areas can expect dry weather and sunshine. High pressure will build over southern Oregon ahead of a storm projected to move in from Canada at midweek.

FOCUS: Near-record Warmth This Week

High pressure is expected to strengthen over the Gulf of Mexico this week and spread warm air up through the Southeast. Daily record high temperatures may be challenged Thursday and Friday as readings climb into the 70s and lower 80s.
