Rain will soak an expansive area Sunday from the central Gulf Coast region all the way to southern New England as an area of low pressure moves toward upstate New York. Thunderstorms may be strong from central Louisiana to western Georgia, while heavy rain this weekend may cause flooding across parts of the South and the Tennessee Valley. Heavy rain is also expected from Virginia to southern New England. Highs will reach the 60s as far north as Maryland and Delaware.

Snow will finally move away from Chicago later Sunday after more than a week of daily snowfall. Snow and ice will cause travel difficulties in parts of the Ohio Valley, the eastern Great Lakes and portions of upstate New York and northern New England.

Cold but dry weather will prevail from central Montana to northern Wisconsin with some sunshine and temperatures in the teens. Nighttime lows will drop well below zero in most of those areas.

Scattered showers will pepper western sections of Washington and Oregon, while a few snow showers are expected in the interior Northwest. In contrast, warm, dry weather will persist across the Southwest, with temperatures in the 70s in southern Arizona.

Focus: Southwest Turning Cooler

After a long stretch of dry, unseasonably warm conditions, the Southwest will turn cooler this week. Spotty showers are expected in Southern California and the desert Southwest on Monday and Tuesday, helping to lessen the wildfire danger.
