The area from the Atlantic Seaboard to much of the Appalachians can expect some sunshine and dry weather Saturday. A zone of high pressure is forecast to settle toward the coast. Chilly conditions are likely to hold on.

Farther west, moisture will gather over the lower Mississippi Valley, causing rain and thunderstorms. This storm is forecast to expand northeast Saturday night. Areas from the upper Mississippi Valley to the eastern Great Lakes can expect wintry conditions with mainly light snow. Enough snow is forecast to cause slippery travel. Most areas from the Ohio Valley to the central and southern Plains will stay dry. Much colder air is forecast to begin over the northern Plains. Some of the lowest temperatures of the winter set during early January may be challenged.

In the West, snow will fall from the northern Rockies to the northern High Plains as a storm moves out of the southern Canada Rockies. The coastal Northwest can expect rain and mild air with showers near the Idaho border. The Southwest can expect a continuation of record-challenging warmth with a good deal of sunshine and poor air quality. The dryness and risk of brush fires will continue into early next week.

FOCUS: Northeast Snow Potential Sunday

A storm is expected to move from the southern states into the Northeast on Sunday into early Monday. Several inches of snow may fall later Saturday night into early Tuesday from the Great Lakes through northern New England.
