A powerful storm will continue to affect the East Tuesday. Along the East Coast, a mass of chilly ocean air is expected to depart as a warm flow of air moves in from the South. Drenching rain and spotty thunderstorms will extend from Florida to Maine. The rain will follow ice and snow in northern New England, which may result in flash flooding and ice jams.

Chilly air will extend from the Mississippi Valley to the central and southern Appalachians. Snow showers are expected in the Ohio Valley as a snowstorm and blizzard conditions wind down over the Upper Midwest. In the storm’s wake, milder air will move into the East. Most areas from the Mississippi Valley to the Plains, the Rockies and the Southwest can expect at least partial sunshine. High pressure will extend from the southern Plains to the northern Rockies.

In the Northwest, a storm will move ashore from the Pacific. Rain is in the forecast from western Washington to coastal areas of Oregon. Snow will fall on the high country of the Washington Cascades. Rain and mountain snow are projected to push inland Tuesday night and Wednesday.

FOCUS: Stormy Along the West Coast

A series of storms will affect the West Coast this week. Most of the rain from these storms will fall from Western Washington to Northern California. Snow will be heavy at times from the Cascades through the northern Sierra, resulting in travel delays in the passes.
