Warm Pacific air will build over the southern and central Plains on Tuesday, moving north from Mexico. Mild air will stretch from the Midwest to the Northeast, resulting in the highest temperatures since before Christmas in many spots. Snow showers are expected to linger over northern New England. Most areas from the Northeast to the Plains can expect a dry day, with some sunshine.

Moisture will linger from the central Gulf Coast to part of the Southeast Coast. It will be mild, with showers.

In the West, rain and mountain snow will extend from the Pacific Coast to the Rockies. The rain will be heavy enough to increase the risk of flash flooding and mudslides in California, especially in spots where wildfires recently charred the landscape. This will be the most rainfall many parts of the Southwest have received since last winter. Some of the high country of the Sierra Nevada and the Rockies can expect feet of snow. Slightly lighter rain and mountain snow will affect the Northwest. As the California storm moves northeast and combines with a mass of arctic air, blizzard conditions may develop over the northern Plains and the Upper Midwest on Wednesday night and Thursday.

Focus: Snow and Ice on Friday

Snow is expected to spread into the Great Lakes and Ontario on Friday as a storm moves north from the Tennessee Valley. Significant ice may develop from northern Pennsylvania to northern New England on Friday night and into early Saturday.
