A shallow push of arctic air paired with lingering moisture will lead to some icy and dangerous conditions across parts of the southern Plains. Some light freezing drizzle is centered on the Interstate-20 corridor from northern Texas to Alabama. While ice is not expected to build up enough to bring down trees or power lines, there is the potential for icy roads and sidewalks.

Farther south, it is expected to only rain through southern Texas and the Gulf Coast, while temperatures remain well above freezing.

Lake-effect snow will continue across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, western Michigan and New York, as well as northwestern Pennsylvania. Snow will continue through Tuesday, and some areas can expect more than a foot of accumulation.

While most of the country is going to endure bitter cold, temperatures will still be pleasant and in the lower 70s for Southern California, southern Arizona and South Florida.

High pressure will build across the Northwest, creating sunshine and cooler temperatures. It will be much closer to the average high for the last day of the year.

Focus: Frosty Welcome in Store for 2018

From Boise, Idaho, to Boston and New Orleans, temperatures will be well below average as people ring in the new year. While it will feel like the mid-20s across the Southeast, partygoers will need to dress for subzero conditions across the northern Plains and Northeast.
