As arctic air holds on from the Northeast to the interior South and the Southern Plains, frigid air will move over the north-central states Saturday. High pressure is forecast to build south from Manitoba, Canada. People venturing outdoors and not properly dressed will be at risk for hypothermia and frostbite.

Snow is forecast to streak from the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley to the central Appalachians and part of the Northeast coast on Saturday. Snowfall will generally be under 2 inches, but there may be some exceptions. Because of the low temperatures, much of the snow will stick to road surfaces. Some brief melting and freezing may occur. Take caution on the roads.

Farther south, rain is forecast from Louisiana to the upper Texas coast. Ice is likely over parts of Oklahoma and north-central Texas because of a shallow layer of cold air. Farther northwest, snow is projected to dwindle over the northern Rockies and High Plains, after up to a few feet of snow fell in the region during the most recent storm. Rain is forecast to diminish in coastal Washington and Oregon.

Much of the Southwest can expect dry, sunny weather to continue. High pressure will hover along the California coast with light winds expected.

Focus: Arctic Air Expands Into Next Week

A large area of unseasonably cold air will expand across the eastern two-thirds of the nation through next week. Temperatures from the northern Plains to the Southeast will average 15 to 30 degrees below normal for the period.
