Another mild day is expected across most of the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic. Afternoon temperatures will be in the 50s across parts of the Northeast and in the 60s in the Mid-Atlantic. Cold air will linger across northern New England. Expect plenty of clouds as a low-pressure system spins across southern Quebec. A few rain and snow showers may affect parts of upstate New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The Southeast will be mild, with temperatures 6 to 12 degrees above normal in most spots. High pressure will keep most of the region dry. A low-pressure system will bring heavy rain to parts of Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley, which may result in flooding.

High pressure will expand south into the northern Plains and the Midwest, bringing dry conditions. A stiff northwest breeze will push cold air across the Upper Midwest.

In the Northwest, a strong low-pressure system will move into Washington, bringing rain and mountain snow. While some rain will reach Northern California late in the day, Southern California will remain dry. Wildfires will produce smoky, hazy skies.

FOCUS: Downpours in the South

Heavy rain will spread from East Texas to the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday into Wednesday. The downpours may cause flash flooding in spots, but they should also provide drought relief. Isolated severe thunderstorms may rumble along the southern fringe of the rain.
