As milder air moves into the Northeast, rain, snow and freezing drizzle are expected from parts of the Ohio Valley and the central Appalachians to northern New England. Temperatures will rise even in areas where clouds persist, but the most significant warming will be in sunny spots along the Middle Atlantic coast and around the western Great Lakes.

Moisture will linger from central and coastal Texas to Alabama and parts of Georgia, with rain. Lighter showers are in store for coastal Georgia, South Carolina and the Tennessee Valley. A few showers may affect parts of New Mexico.

Dry and mild conditions will stretch from the central and northern Plains to the central Rockies. A high-pressure system will move east from the Great Basin.

Snow is expected to develop from Montana to North Dakota and northern Minnesota, ahead of a colder air mass moving into the region from western Canada. Rain will fall across Western Washington. Even colder air is projected to move into much of the Central states late in the week, before Christmas.

California will remain dry. The wind should ease Monday and Tuesday, with another round of potentially high winds arriving later this week.

Focus: Winter Storm to Affect Holiday Travel

On Friday, early holiday travelers may encounter wet roads, poor visibility and low clouds from the Northeast and the southern Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast. Snow and ice may disrupt travel from northern New England to the northern Great Lakes.
