Lawmakers are gearing up to shut down for the year, pushing bills through committees so they can be addressed before or shortly after the General Assembly approves a final budget next week.

House Speaker Tim Moore said the conference committee should have a negotiated budget to present to the House and the Senate for votes next Monday and Tuesday, which would provide a 10-day window for Gov. Roy Cooper to veto the spending plan before the start of the new fiscal year on July 1.

Meanwhile, state NAACP President Rev. William Barber called on lawmakers to immediately stop passing legislation and get on with redrawing voting maps to replace those declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.
