Durham science museum opens Forts exhibit

The Museum of Life and Science in Durham has a pop-up exhibit this month that's back by popular demand.

Forts! encourages guests to use everyday materials to build tunnels, tents and secret hiding spaces, according to a press release. It's designed for all ages and includes special activities for the youngest museum visitors.

It is open daily through March 19. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m., Sunday. (Note that the museum is closed March 6). You'll find it inside the main building.

"This year, we've expanded the Forts! exhibit to include more opportunities for open-ended building," said Kelly Marks, exhibit designer, in a press release. "We've added a system that encourages creative construction using specially adapted cardboard panels and another using thin PVC pipe. Building with loose parts such as these encourages problem-solving and helps develop gross motor skills. Never mind, all the opportunities for dramatic play."

Forts! is free with admission to the museum, which is $16 and $11 for ages 3 to 12.
