I-40 May Open by Labor Day

Motorists may be able to take Interstate 40 straight across the Tennessee state line by Labor Day.

That's the latest goal for workers trying to clear unstable rock and dirt from the rock slide area in the mountains. But no matter the deadline, Department of Transportation officials say they will open the road only when it's safe.

The road has been closed since July first.
