Final Arguments Heard Friday in Pool Drain Trial

Jurors heard final arguments Friday in the case of a child who was seriously injured by suction from a swimming pool drain. The jury will begin its deliberations Monday.

About 80 percent of Valerie Lakey's intestines were pulled out when she got stuck on the open drain in a children's pool at a Cary swim club. The child was 5-years-old at the time.

Lakey's parents have filed suit against Sta-Rite Industries, the Wisconsin company that manufacturers the drain covers, for nearly $40 million. Attorneys for Sta-Rite maintain the company did no wrong and that it was the pool staff's failure to properly close the drains that caused the accident.
