The General Assembly took less than nine hours Wednesday to pass what the Republican leadership called a nondiscrimination bill. Gov. Pat McCrory was expected to sign it before the end of the night.
The bill overturns a Charlotte nondiscrimination ordinance, including a provision that would allow transgender people to use the public bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity; enacts a statewide policy on nondiscrimination in employment and public accommodations that doesn't include protections for gays and lesbians; and prohibits North Carolina cities and counties from enacting stricter nondiscrimination guidelines.

The measure brought out impassioned pleas on both sides of the debate, produced some blowback from large corporations with LGBT policies and included some political posturing from lawmakers.
