A former Wake County school bus driver was charged with four counts of misdemeanor child abuse after refusing to open bus windows for students during a hot summer day last year.
Several students complained of feeling ill after the September 10 bus ride. Two students testified they had asthma attacks.

The bus driver, Patty Leach, argued she was trying to maintain order. She claimed the children were yelling obscenities and throwing things out the windows at passing cars.
Leach was sentenced to one year of probation and has to undergo a mental health assessment.
