Raleigh data becomes more accessible

By the middle of the month, the city will launch the final version of its open data website, Open Raleigh.

Members of the Technology and Communications Committee got a brief overview of the site last week.

Since last year, the site has been operating in beta and staff have been collecting and uploading city data for data geeks to download, analyze and visualize.

The website will be getting a bit of a makeover, but its most noticeable difference will be its mobile-responsive design. Users can now view the website more easily on their smartphones or tablets.

The new homepage is live for users to visit, but those wishing to work with the data will be brought back to the old site until March 15.

The city provides data visualizations, but users can also log in and create their own.

“They can’t change the underlying data set; all they can do is visualize the data,” said Jason Hare, the city’s open data manager.

More than 150 data visualizations have been made using the 2014 budget information.
