Drivers who found themselves trapped for hours in traffic on snow-covered Triangle roadways had several options for shelter and warmth.

In Durham, the Streets of Southpoint mall stayed open as snow and freezing rain fell, and several travelers sought refuge there for the night, a security guard said.

Elsewhere, shelters opened to provide a warm option for resident who lost power or were otherwise unable to weather the winter storm in their homes.

Volunteers said anyone planning to go to a shelter should make sure to bring essential items, including identification; presciptions and special needs items for children and elderly family members; extra clothes, pillows, blankets and hygiene supplies; and foods that meet dietary restrictions.

Cumberland County

Fayetteville – Smith Recreation Center, 1520 Slater Ave. Call 433-1571.

Durham County

The  Streets of Southpoint has opened it’s doors to take in people stuck on Interstate 40. Drivers can stay inside the mall as long as is necessary, a spokesman said.

Edgecombe/Nash County
Rocky Mount – Englewood Baptist Church, 1350 S. Winstead Ave. Shelter opens at 3 p.m.

Franklin County

Louisburg - Franklin County Senior Center, 127 Shannon Village. Shelter opens at 5 p.m. There is limited space at the Franklin County Animal Shelter for pets.

Harnett County

Gospel Tabernacle Church - 2105 W. Cumberland St., Dunn

Benson – West Johnston High School, 5935 Raleigh Road.

Moore County

Aberdeen – Southern Middle School, 515 Johnson St. Most pets allowed.

Orange County

A phone bank number has been established at 919-245-6111. Volunteers are available to answer questions about power outages and shelter locations. No shelters are open at this time.

Wake County

Apex – United Methodist Church, 100 S. Hughes St. Shelter opens at 4 p.m.

Knightdale High School, 100 Bryan Chalk Lane in Knightdale

Garner – Garner United Methodist Church, 201 Methodist Drive. Shelter opens at 4 p.m.
