Wake detention officer indicted in inmate's death

A Wake County detention officer was indicted Tuesday on a charge of voluntary manslaughter in the June 17 death of an inmate at the Wake County Detention Center.

Shon Demetrius McClain, 40, died from blunt force trauma to the head and neck 13 days after, the Wake County Sheriff's Office says, he was involved in an argument with officer Markeith Montrail Council.

Council, a detention officer at the jail since 2009, was initially placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of a review by the State Bureau of Investigation and a decision on charges by the Wake County District Attorney's Office.

A spokesman for the sheriff's office said Tuesday that Council has since been suspended without pay.

McLain was in jail awaiting a court date on misdemeanor charges at the time of the June 4 assault.

According to an investigative report by the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, McClain punched an unnamed prison guard in the face during the argument after the guard shoved him.

The guard then threw McClain to the ground twice, but the report says McCain appeared to be unconscious after the first throw.
