Rocky Mount Field Contains High Levels Of Arsenic

High levels of arsenic put renovation plans on hold in Rocky Mount.

City leaders say a vacant field, where a tobacco facility once stood, contains about two feet of dirt that has been polluted by arsenic.

The total cost of the cleanup could approach $600,000.

Two federal grants will cover most of the cleanup. The city will have to pay the rest.

Part of the field will be converted into a parking lot. Other portions may be used to build homes.
