Orange to implement transit tax

The Orange County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to begin collecting a half-cent sales tax to generate funds for public transit projects.

Local voters approved the tax last month.

The county also will impose a $7 vehicle registration fee for transit projects, and Triangle Transit Authority will collect a $3 vehicle registration fee.

Durham County, which approved a transit tax a year ago, will begin collecting it in April. Wake County hasn't yet put a transit tax on the local ballot.
