Renovation Project Could Cost Durham Taxpayers $10 Million

A downtown renovation project could have Durham taxpayers ponying up millions of dollars for the deal.

The plan is to convert the old Liggett-Myers tobacco complex into apartments, shops and offices.

The proposed deal would require the city to invest more than $10 million for things like street improvements.

In turn, Blue Devil Ventures would be expected to complete the renovation work by fall 2007.

Durham's city council is set to vote on the proposal in two weeks.
