Panel Supports Giving Counties Option Of Raising Taxes For Roads

A blue ribbon panel wants the state to give counties the option to raise your sales tax, gas tax and vehicle registration fees.

The money would be used for road improvements.

The proposal comes at a time when the North Carolina DOT is planning to shift more than $300 million from metropolitan to rural areas.

The panel plans to release its "local option" recommendation in the next few months.
