Summer heat comes with a shot of storms

Seasonable summer heat and storm chances will settle in for the long haul in North Carolina this week.

Monday is "just your general, run-of-the-mill day," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said. "High of 90 degrees, and yep, we have a chance for afternoon storms, which is pretty typical."

Monday afternoon and evening will see about a 30 percent chance of isolated to scattered showers and storms. There's little chance of severe weather, though the storms could dump short-lived heavy downpours.

That weather pattern will hold throughout the work week as "a mini-heat wave" starts Tuesday, Gardner said.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will see highs in the mid 90s, and the heat index will make it feel as it's between 100 and 105 degrees.

The mini-heat wave will break in time to bring pleasant weather for the weekend.

Friday will see a high around 90 degrees, and that will drop into the upper 80s for Saturday and Sunday.

Every day this week also has a shot at spotty late-day showers. "Almost any day here during the summer, you can expect a chance of a thunderstorms," Gardner said.
