David Benson sculpted Raleigh's New Year's Eve acorn in 1991, and it has been lowered in downtown Raleigh every year since.

“It brings Raleigh together. It brings everybody together—you know, every social background together, every culture together. And I think that we need more of that. We need more of the whole world doing that,” the artist says during a break.
