Acorn Artist Readies Copper Creation for Raleigh New Year's Celebration

Every New Year's Eve since 1991, the copper acorn has dropped in downtown Raleigh as part of the city's celebration. The sculptor who made it, David Benson, is furiously polishing his pride and joy for this year's end.

Every New Year's Eve since 1991, the copper acorn has dropped in downtown Raleigh as part of the city's celebration. The sculptor who made it, David Benson, is furiously polishing his pride and joy for this year's end.

David Benson sculpted Raleigh's New Year's Eve acorn in 1991, and it has been lowered in downtown Raleigh every year since.

Now, with New Year's Eve two weeks away, the artist is polishing his work in preparation.

“It brings Raleigh together. It brings everybody together—you know, every social background together, every culture together. And I think that we need more of that. We need more of the whole world doing that,” the artist says during a break.

Then, it’s back to brush and rag. New Year’s is coming up fast.
