A Halifax County deputy is recovering after his cruiser struck a pickup truck south of Roanoke Rapids.
Authorities say Deputy James Avant swerved Wednesday night to miss a large dog in the middle of the road, causing the accident.

Avant and the driver of the pickup truck were treated for minor injuries.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
