Duke AD's Son Pleads Guilty in Boating Accident

The son of Duke University's athletic director has pleaded guilty to operating a boat in a reckless manner in connection with a boat accident that injured his father, authorities said.

J.D. Alleva, 28, had been charged with driving a boat while impaired, but that charge was dropped as part of a plea agreement. He was ordered to pay $90 and court costs.

Alleva, the son of Duke athletic director Joe Alleva, crashed a boat into rocks on Hyco Lake in Person County in June. After the accident, he swam about three-quarters of a mile to the nearest lake house to use a telephone to call for help, authorities said.

Joe Alleva was treated at Person Memorial Hospital for a head injury that required 42 stitches.

J.D. Alleva refused to give officers a breath or blood sample, but three officers smelled alcohol on him several hours after the accident, authorities said.
