What kind of bird is that? What about that plant?

If you've ever been outside and wondered what you were seeing, there are apps that can help you identify those plants and animals. Here are three of the best:

– Plantsnap. Take a picture of the plant, and the app will identify it. It works with all kinds of plants, including flowers and trees.

The developers say it can recognize about 90 percent of all plant species on Earth. Plantsnap is $3.99 for iOS and Android.

– Merlin Bird ID. Take a picture of a bird, and Merlin will identify it almost instantly, and if you can't get a picture, you can answer some questions to help identify the bird.

Merlin Bird ID is free for iOS and Android.

– I Naturalist. The app lets you learn about all kinds of living things. Take a picture of a plant, insect or animal and a community of 400,000 scientists and nature-lovers can help you identify it and learn more about it.
