FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — An Apex woman was killed Sunday morning when her car went down a 20-foot ravine and hit a tree on Fuquay-Varina's Main Street, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Troopers said Melissa Liegeot, 22, was leaving a friend's house and headed to work when she crashed around 10 a.m. Speed was not a factor, and the cause of the wreck is under investigation.

U.S. Highway 401 was closed to northbound traffic for about two hours. Traffic was diverted off U.S. 401 to N.C. Highway 55 while the scene was cleared and the crash investigated.
