APEX, N.C. — In a double-wide workspace in Wake County, there is life-saving work happening.

"We have machines, we have scraps of fabric, supplies to help fill this need," said Sandra VanSickle

It's a need for protective masks.

VanSickle said the group is, "trying to meet a need, for not only the medical field, but for the general population."

VanSickle creates custom draperies, and hosts a popular webcast about sewing. She normally teaches sewing techniques, but recently asked her viewers to help make protective masks. She started the Facebook group, Mask America.

Now more than a thousand people nation-wide are sewing with her.

VanSickle said as of Thursday night they had made nearly 22,000 masks -- 22,000 masks from people who have put their lives and jobs on hold to help.

"They are being so generous and supportive, for that, I'm grateful and humbled and emotional," said VanSickle.

VanSickle takes very little of the credit. She believes in time of crisis, the sewing community rises to meet the need.

"There's been a flood of emotions. There's been a flood of this feeling of being overwhelmed with the generosity that so many within our community are coming together and filling this need," said VanSickle.
