APEX, N.C. — Some restaurants in North Carolina are dealing with what they believe is a labor shortage, leaving them without the employees needed to run their business.

Since February, Salem Street Pub in Apex has been seeing an increase in customers as life gradually returns to normal from the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting Thursday, the pub will only be open for dinner.

The trend is an unexpected one in the return to pre-pandemic life as some workers don’t want to go back to the jobs they had before the pandemic.

The owners said they are short on kitchen staff and are struggling to find people to hire, often running into interview no-shows or people not seeking employment. They've recently expanded their space and need more staff.

The North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association told WRAL that many restaurants in the state are experiencing the same thing.

"We've almost doubled our square footage and we need the staff to be able to service," said Jennifer Duckart, co-owner of the pub. "We feel like we're doing everything we can. We want nothing more than to just run this wide open."

The pub owners said they're willing to train people interested in entering the industry.
