APEX, N.C. — Apex police said they've received a number of reports of being shot with a BB gun — and that it stems from a viral TikTok challenge. Police said three people have been victimized by the dangerous trend in Apex, so far.

One of the most recent shootings happened on Tuesday at the corner of Tingen Road and Salem Street. Nancy Taylor, 67, said she was also robbed during the incident.

Taylor said she was walking down Salem Street - like she always does - when suddenly she heard what sounded like an airgun.

"I just felt my back go on fire," said Taylor. "I had been hit three times."

Since February, Apex police said they've received seven similar reports. Incident reports from Apex Police Department showed the suspects in the cases are all juveniles. Similar shootings have also been reported in Wake County and across the county.

Raleigh police were called to Pamlico Drive and Rowan Street in Raleigh earlier in the month for a report of a woman being shot in the face with an Airsoft gun.

"I suddenly felt like a massive force hit the side of my face ... it felt like something like shattering pain," said Melissa Abrahamsen on March 10. "The next thing I know, I just kind of bee-lined down the street."

Florida police have also warned against the "Orbeez Challenge." The Associated Press reports in Florida an Amazon delivery driver and a 10-year-old child have been shot.

Taylor said she's glad she left her 17-year-old dog, Denni, home on the day of the shooting.

"I don't know if they would aim at him or if it was just a TikTok challenged aimed at people," she said.

Taylor has several welts on her back and was able to recover after a few days. But Taylor said her confidence of walking in her own neighborhood is shattered.

"They took away that feeling of just going anywhere in Apex and being safe," said Taylor. "My message would be you are messing with people's lives and minds and their security by doing this."

Apex police said they're urging parents to educate their children on the dangers of BB guns.
