Apex Police Officer McKee honored Apex resident Joshua McMillan with a Chief's Coin early Sunday morning after he saved residents from a house fire.

Chief's coins are given to community members who do "any out of the ordinary community service," said Capt. Mitch McKinney

The Apex Police Department said McMillan ran across the street from his home to the fire at 111 Harbor Haven Drive.

He pounded on the door to wake the residents to warn them after he saw the flames.

He was awarded the coin for his "quick thinking, heroic actions," according to the department. The department said it was grateful for McMillan's actions that morning
