GARNER, N.C. — Apex police captain Eric Buchanan has been charged in the assault of his wife at a Circle K gas station in Garner, according to the Johnston County Sheriff's Office.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 6 p.m. on Friday from the Circle K at 34 Pipeline Drive.

The caller identifies herself as Buchanan's daughter, telling the dispatcher, "My father just attacked my mother."

According to a spokesperson from the Johnston County Sheriff's Office, the alleged attack left Buchanan's wife cut and bruised.

The 911 caller told the dispatcher that her father left in his black Ford Escape, likely to go to his apartment. In the 911 call, she can be heard frantically searching for her cell phone to provide her father's address to the dispatcher.

Buchanan, 39, was arrested later that evening at his Garner apartment and charged with assault on a female.

He was booked into the Johnston County Detention Center but posted bail.

An internal investigation is underway. The Apex Police Department said Buchanan is on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.

"We take these matters seriously, and will do our due diligence to ensure we gather all information available related to this incident," said Apex police chief Jason Armstrong.
