APEX, N.C. — A man was in custody Tuesday after threatening law enforcement officers in an Apex neighborhood, authorities said.

Apex police and Wake County deputies responded to a disturbance at 2924 Evans Road at about 8 a.m. As two Apex officers approached the front door, a man pointed an assault-style weapon at them and retreated inside, authorities said.

Sheriff Gerald Baker said the man was shouting racial slurs at passersby, prompting someone to call 911.

"I’m keeping my distance, cause he’s crazy. He’s harassed me twice. I don’t trust that guy," a caller told a 911 dispatcher. "He’s calling us all kinds of racial slurs."

Baker and the man's mother called the house to try to persuade the man to put down the gun and come outside, but the efforts weren't successful. The sheriff's office Tactical Response Team then deployed tear gas inside the home, and the man surrendered, authorities said.

No shots were fired, and no injuries were reported.

"We are always interested in making sure that, in these types of situations, that we go in the safest way possible through training, through tactical operations, to make sure we keep from having to injure someone or be injured," Baker said.
