After student hit near school, Apex makes changes to crosswalks
The Town of Apex has reviewed pedestrian safety around every one of its public schools after a 10-year-old girl was hit by a car while walking home from school last fall.
Posted — UpdatedJoy Williams, a student at Laurel Park Elementary School, said she was crossing Laura Duncan Road in October 2017 and could not see the car that hit her. She was not seriously hurt.
Following the crash, her parents asked for a crosswalk and a crossing guard and, as of October 2018, some changes have been made.
The town is working to hire a crossing guard, but a crosswalk has been added. Officials are also working to add more lights and signs.
School carpool lanes are being moved so they don't block a pedestrian's view of oncoming traffic and gaps in the sidewalks are being filled in.
Other changes will take longer since they require cooperation with the state, such as the crossings at the intersection of Laura Duncan and U.S. Highway 64, and adding a sidewalk on the Olive Chapel Road bridge across from Interstate 540.
Officials said Salem Elementary and Middle schools did not require any changes.
