The series is about a love triangle between one teen girl and two boys, and it's even garnered the interest of Taylor Swift, who's music is featured on the show.
"I thought Belly, which is my role, young Belly, she's a very relatable character," Hicks told WRAL.
Hicks also emphasized the importance of her character's Asian American representation.
"The Summer I Turned Pretty" premieres on Amazon Prime on Friday.
