BENSON, N.C. — A 42-year-old Angier man died in a crash early Monday as his wife called 911 and tried to pull him from his van, according to troopers.

Ismael Rangel Martinez, of 17 Windmere Drive, was driving west on Elevation Road near Benson when he lost control in a curve, drove into a ditch and struck a tree at about 12:45 a.m., troopers said.

His wife, whose name was not released, was following in another vehicle about a quarter mile behind him and came upon the crash.

Martinez's wife tried to help him get out of the vehicle, but was unable, troopers said. Martinez died by the time authorities arrived.

Troopers said they don't think alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. Martinez was speeding, but not excessively, authorities said. No other information was released.
