SAN FRANCISCO — A toddler playing in a San Francisco public park almost died after somehow being exposed to the opioid fentanyl.

Fast action by the boy's nanny and paramedics saved his life.

His parents say 10-month-old Sena and his twin brother, Antun, enjoy looking at things up close.

Sena was doing that at Moscone Park when his nanny noticed he starting to lose consciousness.

"So I shook him, and I'm like, something's wrong," Wendy Marroqui, his nanny, said. "I saw his face and he was dizzy .. I thought he's not breathing."

Marroqui applied crucial CPR and called 9-1-1.

The boy's father, Ivan Matkovic, rushed to the park from work to see the paramedics helping his son.

"All you know is your kid is not breathing, right? And you see them helping him breathe," Matkovic said.

He was stunned to see a paramedic administer Narcan, a treatment for drug overdoses, to his son.

He said exposure to drugs wasn't even on his mind, and he was grateful the paramedic recognized the symptoms even in a toddler.

"You know, those first responders just saved my son's life," Matkovic said. "We're just so lucky that we got the guy we got."

Sena went to the emergency room, where his parents were told the opioid involved was fentanyl.

Now at home, the boy's parents and Marroqui said they hope police find out how it happened. They also want to pass on a lesson learned as they count their blessings.

"We came out of it with a positive story -- and we can tell other people to be aware that this is a risk," Matkovic said.
