Greensboro PD: Father of kidnapped 9-month-old charged with murder

According to Greensboro police, Deon Lamar Monk, 23, of Dunn, was charged with other crimes in addition to murder, including:

An Amber Alert was canceled Friday for 9-month-old Kayson, who was found safe at a home in Harnett County sleeping on an air mattress with his father, according to the sheriff.

Kayson was taken by his father on Thursday afternoon. Deon, who was also wanted for the murder of a woman, was taken into custody early Friday.

The Harnett County Sheriff's Office said Deon Monk was caught off guard by his arrest.

"It was peaceful, he stood there a few minutes and was looking like 'what am I gonna do now,'" Sheriff Wayne Coats described.

According to the sheriff, investigators believe Monk was hiding with his son at his friend's house after taking the boy.

Kayson appeared to be in good health when he was examined by paramedics and is being returned home to his mother in Greensboro, according to the Harnett County Sheriff's Office, which shared a photo of the baby with his rescuers.

"The good thing about all this [at the] end of the day [is] the child got reunited back with his mother, everyone went home, no one was hurt, that’s the main thing right there," said Coats.

In addition to taking his son, Deon Monk was connected to a deadly shooting that occurred Thursday afternoon on Phillips Avenue in Greensboro, where he and Kayson were last seen.

Police said they found a 25-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds at 2415 Phillips Ave. The woman, identified as Sharelle Johnson, died. The man was expected to recover.

Police did not know the nature of the relationship between Deon Monk and the two victims.
