One of the best feelings in life is being able to use your time and talent to give back. If we’re lucky, when these opportunities come our way, we are in a position to grab them and run with them.

The Tammy Lynn Center was founded in 1969 to help improve the lives of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was a time when there were very few options for families of special needs‘ children. Since that time, the nonprofit has become a bedrock in the community for residential programs, home-based programs and early childhood education for this population.

So, when my friend and TLC CEO Dan Daniel pitched to me the idea of writing a book on behalf of the organization, I jumped at the opportunity. Full disclosure: I have only written one other children’s book, so it is not a big part of my wheelhouse, but with the help of Mascot Books, I was able to bring the project to fruition.

“We Are Not the Same, and That’s Okay” teaches young readers about interacting with children who are living with disabilities. It encourages them to find common ground with these children and understand that they are not all that different despite what they may look like or what their challenges may be. The hope is that if we talk to our kids about these issues at a young age, when meeting someone who is living with disabilities, they will react in a more positive way.

I hope it will embody the mission of the Tammy Lynn center, which is “To empower individuals of all abilities to live their fullest life.”

Because after all, isn’t that what we all really want?
