My older daughter came home from college this weekend. It was her first time coming home to our new house after our recent move, and now, it finally feels like home. There’s something about having your kids under one roof that makes a house feel like a home.

I know we will celebrate holidays and special events here like birthdays. These are the things that create memories in a house. They give it energy and give us a sense of belonging. But a big part of creating those positive feelings in a home involves filling it with the people you love like your children and your friends.

I look forward to the time that I look around and no longer remember not calling this home. For now, I am taking it one day at a time, trying to remember where I put the coffee cups, the trash bags and the extra sheets.

But I know that places eventually, seamlessly, morph into the fabric of our lives like a favorite old, worn pair of jeans. You drive home from work, unconsciously, familiarity leading the way. That day will come, and so will the laughter, the tears, and everything else that makes up the life of a family in between these four walls that we call home.

Amanda is the mom of two, a reporter for WRAL-TV and the author of several books including some on motherhood. Find her here on Mondays.
