Almost half of coronavirus cases spread without symptoms
State health secretary Mandy Cohen said Monday that a new analysis of many studies shows as many as 49% of cases of the novel coronavirus are spread by people who are not showing symptoms.
NEXT AT 5:30 THE NOW AT 5:30. IT WAS JUST DISCUSSED -- HELLO AND THANKS FOR JOINING US. >> HE TALKED ABOUT RECENT RESEARCH TALKING ABOUT HOW NEARLY ALL CASES ARE BEING CONTRACTED. LAURA JOINS US NOW LIVE. >> IT IS NOT IN A STUDY ITSELF. IT IS AN ANALYSIS THAT LOOKS A LOT OF DIFFERENT PLACES. WHAT IT FOUND IS AS MANY AS 49% OF CASES OF CORONAVIRUS ARE SPREAD BY PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT SHOWING SYMPTOMS AT THE TIME. AS SOME OF THOSE PEOPLE MAY GO ON TO SHOW SYMPTOM ASS A FEW DAY -- SYMPTOM AS FEW DAYS LATER. COHEN SAID THAT IS WHY SOCIAL DISTANCING IS SO IMPORTANT AND SO IS WEARING A MASK TO PROTECT OTHER PEOPLE. >> WHAT -- THAT IS WHAT IS SO HARD ABOUT COVID-19. IT IS SO OFTEN THAT PEOPLE CAN HAVE COVID-19 AND NOT KNOW IT AND THEN INFECT A LOT OF FOLKS. >> THEY ARE WORRIED ABOUT THIS AT MASS GATHERINGS. ONE CALLED SUPER SPREADER AT ONE OF THESE EVENTS COULD SPARK AN OUTBREAK OF THE VIRUS AND PEOPLE ATTENDING IT FROM OTHER PLACES WOULD TAKE IT BACK HOME WITH THEM. THIS ALSO RAISES SOME QUESTIONS FOR US ABOUT SAFETY SCREENING. LAW MAKERS ARE RELYING ON TEMPERATURE CHECKS TO DECIDE WHETHER PEOPLE CAN COME INTO THE BUILDING. IF SOMEONE IS INFECTED AND NOT SHOWING SYMPTOMS THEY WOULDN'T HAVE A FEVER. THAT TEMPERATURE CHECK SCREENING WOULD NOT CATCH THEM. BACK TO YOU. >> WE CONTINUE TO LEARN MORE AND
