WENDELL, N.C. — An alligator was caught and returned to its owner after it managed to escape from its habitat at an educational program in Wendell, authorities said Saturday.

Officers and a biologist from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission told WRAL News that the alligator broke free from its confines last week but was caught and returned to its permanent home Friday around 1:30 p.m.

Wildlife authorities said the unidentified owner did possess the appropriate permits and facility to house the alligator.

It was not immediately clear how the gator was able to escape its confines.
