LAURINBURG, N.C. — The state Division of Water Quality on Friday levied a $97,543 fine against the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport Commission over sludge dumped in Scotland County wetlands.
The state has given the airport a May 25 deadline to get rid of waste that was dumped last fall from the airport's wastewater treatment facility, officials said. The state issued the deadline because the clean-up wasn't proceeding as quickly as expected, officials said.

The fine was assessed to penalize the airport for illegal emissions and to offset the state's investigative costs.

The airport commission has 30 days to appeal the fine. If the commission doesn't comply with the penalty, the case will be turned over to the Attorney General's Office to collect the penalty through a civil suit, officials said.
