Happy New Year: Acorn drop signals start of 2023 at WRAL First Night
Rain did not hinder the midnight acorn drop and fireworks display.
Posted — UpdatedEarly afternoon and evening rain prompted the cancelation of the People's Procession walking parade, which was scheduled to happen at 6 p.m. The rain didn't stop live music from starting on the main stage, though, with the Tray Wellington Band kicking off the night in City Plaza.
After an afternoon of rain, the showers moved out in time for the evening's two acorn drops and fireworks displays.
The early countdown and acorn drop happened as planned at 7 p.m., followed by fireworks. The midnight acorn dropped and fireworks also happened as planned.
Musician Paige King Johnson, a native of Angier, stopped by during WRAL's broadcast of First Night Raleigh.
"I've actually never been to the whole First Night Raleigh thing," Johnson said. "This is a whole experience."
Johnson said she played 133 shows in 2022.
"[I] traveled all over North Carolina [and] South Carolina, [and] all over the Southeast, and that is the dream, so I'm living it every single day," Johnson said.
Music producer and Deep South Entertainment CEO David Rose also took in the festivities at WRAL First Night Raleigh.
"We are truly one of the most creative markets in the entire country, and I attribute that a lot to the schools here, the universities here and the technology here," Rose said.
