A neglected female puppy that was found roaming Rocky Mount is in recovery after receiving much needed medical treatment and love.

The puppy captured hearts on Saturday after being featured in a Facebook post that showed her with a cone on her head, scabs on her body and an infection that was in need of medical care.

"Those pictures were extremely compelling," said the puppy's foster parent, Calley Gerber. "I tend to specialize in the super special needs ones. The lost causes ... they pull at my heartstrings the most."

Two days later the puppy is looking healthier after being taken into foster care, receiving an IV treatment, having a medical bath and being placed on antibiotics.

"She's had a tough run of it, and she's just a baby," Gerber said. "She just wants to be close to a person and just have love. Since she's been with me, she wants to keep her paw on me at all times and make sure that I'm not going anywhere. I keep telling her, I am not going anywhere, she's safe here."

It's unclear whether or not the puppy was abandoned or lost, but her condition leaves vets to believe that she had not received any care for a long time. Along with her poor skin condition, she was also malnourished.

The dog was named Anna Christie, after the two women in one of the animal welfare groups that came out to rescue the dog.

On Sunday, another group that rescued the pup raised $750 dollars for emergency care in just one hour after posting her photo on Facebook.

The non-profit Maggie Society is now covering the expense of her care. They will ultimately put her up for adoption once she gets well enough.

"I have a feeling she has a big following out there and the line is going to be a very long list of qualified adopters," Gerber said.
