EMERALD ISLE, N.C. — After 155 years in downtown Raleigh, the iconic Briggs Hardware store at 111 E. Hargett St. has moved to Emerald Isle.

Evelyn Briggs Davis said her family has called Raleigh home since the late 1700s.

But between COVID-19 and damage from summer riots in downtown, Davis worried she would not be able to stay.

Once the shop's lease was not renewed by the building's landlord, she made the difficult decision to leave.

"It's an exciting new chapter for both the business and my family," said the sixth generation of the Briggs legacy. "My family has had second homes on the Crystal Coast for a few decades, first at Atlantic Beach and now Emerald Isle. I plan to retire the store and myself at this wonderful beach."

The new store reopened Saturday in Emerald Isle in the former home of the Carolina Wine Mixer at Emerald Plantation.
